OASIS GOLF CLUB PALMER COURSE
Las Vegas Golf Course Review 12/28/05 - Photos updated May, 2006
The Oasis is a premier golf facility in Mesquite featuring two outstanding 18-hole championship courses - the
Arnold Palmer designed Palmer Course, and the David Druzisky designed Canyons Course. The property
includes a beautiful clubhouse with pro shop, locker rooms with showers, full service restaurant/lounge, plus
meeting rooms and banquet & outing facilities. A targeted grass range, large putting green and two short game areas with sand bunkers are adjacent.
Each course features outstanding conditioning from tee to green, and is well marked with sprinkler heads about
the course and yardage blocks at 100,150 and 00 yards measured to the center of the green. Color coded flags
indicate front, middle and back hole locations, which is important information to have on the large, sloping putting surfaces prominent on both layouts.
PALMER COURSE
The Palmer Course is the original design at the Oasis - with 18 holes that feature spectacular shot values along
desert mountain terrain - that earned a 4 1/2 star rating from Golf Digest Places to Play. I first played what was
the Oasis 18 when it initially opened in the mid-nineties, when there was pure canyon land with few residences.
Though the environment is now part of a very upscale housing development - the golf course is still spectacular - and the experience is one of my most memorable.
After an inauspicious start, the layout warms up on the par four 3rd, which features a blind tee shot to a rolling
fairway that dips to the left to a green complex guarded by a landscaped water hazard short of the putting
surface. This is a pretty challenging approach - but does not come close to the daunting tee shot one is
confronted with on number five - a par five that plays from an elevated tee area to a landing zone that forms a
sea of green between pink rock canyon walls. It is worth it to drive up to the championship tees to view this hole
from the top of the mountain. Number 7 plays over a desert ravine and the par five 7th is very similar in design to
the spectacular 5th. Subsequent holes play in between and over desert ravines and crevices that will challenge
golfers to play their best shots. There are some terrific photo opportunities on this layout, which also includes
some beautiful water holes. The finishing 18th is a par four that plays from a very elevated tee to a fairway
bordered by residences on the hill to the left, and a lake to the right that affects both the tee shot and approach.
There are five sets of tees on the Palmer, playing to distances and slopes measuring 6633 yards/133 slope,
6130 yards/128 slope, 5688 yards/117 slope, 5202 yards/106 slope for men and 120 for women, and 4508
yards with a slope of 109 for ladies playing from the forward sets. This is one of our favorite layouts in the entire
Las Vegas region - and one that we recommend highly - worth the 1 hour trip from Vegas...
